A second hand electric scooter can look like a bargain. The difficulty is that the things that matter most, such as battery health and hidden damage, are the hardest to judge from a photo or a short test ride. This guide covers what to check if you are considering a private sale, and how refurbished scooters differ.
The risks of buying used
Battery health. A battery loses capacity with age and use, and a tired one shortens range noticeably. Ask how old the scooter is and how it has been charged and stored. A seller who cannot say is worth treating with caution.
Hidden damage. Frames, folding mechanisms and stems take the strain in a fall. Cracks and bent parts are not always obvious, and a repaired scooter may look fine until it is ridden.
No warranty. A private sale usually comes with no cover if something fails a week later.
Stolen scooters. Ask for proof of purchase and the serial number. If the seller cannot provide them, walk away.
A checklist for inspecting a used scooter
Before you hand over any money, work through these points:
- Check that the scooter powers on and that the display shows no error codes.
- Ride it at least a short distance and note any cutting out, unusual noises or vibration.
- Test both brakes and check they feel firm and stop the scooter evenly.
- Look over the frame, stem and folding mechanism for cracks, play or repairs.
- Check the tyres for wear and the wheels for wobble.
- Ask for the receipt, original charger and serial number, and check they match.
- Ask how it has been charged and stored.

We grade each scooter by condition:
- Grade A: like-new appearance with minimal cosmetic wear and very low mileage (under 10km).
- Grade B: minor visible signs of previous use, with light to moderate mileage (10km to 200km).
- Grade C: noticeable cosmetic wear and higher mileage (over 200km).

When new makes more sense
Refurbished suits riders who want to spend less and are comfortable with some cosmetic wear. A new scooter makes more sense if you want the full warranty period, a specific current model or features that refurbished stock does not include, or you simply want to be the first owner.
