Electric scooter rental: how it compares with owning your own

Electric scooter rental: how it compares with owning your own

Electric scooter rental has become a familiar sight in parts of the UK, thanks to government-backed rental trials in selected areas. If you have tried a rental scooter, or you are wondering how renting compares with owning your own, this guide explains how rental works, what the law says and what to weigh up before you choose.

How electric scooter rental works

Rental e-scooters are run by operators within the trial areas. Typically, you find a scooter through the operator's app, unlock it, ride to your destination, park it where the operator allows and pay through the app. The cost usually depends on how long you ride.

Each trial and operator sets out who can ride, where and how, including any checks you need to pass before your first ride. Always read the operator's rules in the app before you set off.

Is it legal to ride a rental e-scooter?

Rental trial scooters are the exception to the current rules, and can be used within the trial areas where they operate, in line with the trial's rules.

Privately owned e-scooters are treated differently. It is currently only legal to use an e-scooter on private land with the permission of the land owner. It is illegal to ride an e-scooter on a public road, cycle path, bridleway or pavement.

Rules can change, and we keep a close eye on every development. For the full picture, read our guide to UK e-scooter law, and follow the latest news on our E-scooter Legislation Hub.

Renting or owning: what to consider

A rental scooter is a handy way to try riding for the first time. Owning your own is a different experience, and it is worth understanding why.

A scooter set up for you

A rental scooter is built to suit everyone, which means it is tuned for no one in particular. When you own your scooter, you choose the range, power, stance and comfort that suit the way you ride. You get to know how it accelerates, how it brakes and how it feels underfoot, and that familiarity builds confidence.

You know how it has been looked after

Shared scooters are ridden by many people, and you cannot always know how the last rider treated it. With your own scooter, you are in control of its care: the tyre pressures, the brakes, the charging. Our electric scooter maintenance guide shows how simple that is.

It is there when you want it

With rental, you depend on a scooter being available nearby, charged and in good order. Your own scooter is ready whenever you are. Models like Flex fold down to fit a car boot, a train or a small space at home, so it can come with you wherever you go.

Engineering you can rely on

Our scooters are engineered in the UK with safety and reliability at their core. The Air⁶ Suspension, for example, pairs dual GlideMotion™ suspension with 10-inch enhanced-grip tubeless tyres for a smooth, composed ride, and every scooter in our current range is limited to 25km/h (15.5mph). Every new scooter also comes with our 12-month warranty.

The cost over time

Rental suits the occasional ride. If you plan to ride often, owning can work out better value over time. Our guide to what an electric scooter costs in the UK breaks down what to expect.
